To earn ad revenue you must join the YouTube Partner Program (YPP). You qualify with 1,000 subscribers plus either 4,000 public watch hours in the last 12 months or 10 million public Shorts views in the last 90 days.

There is also an earlier tier for fan funding (memberships, Super Thanks): 500 subscribers, 3 public uploads in 90 days and 3,000 watch hours (or 3 million Shorts views).

Tips to reach it faster

Long videos (8+ minutes) build watch hours much faster than Shorts.
Use playlists and end screens so viewers watch several videos in a row.
Live streams count towards watch hours once they are saved publicly.

How many subscribers do I need for monetization?

1,000 subscribers for ad revenue (500 for the fan-funding tier).

Do Shorts views count for watch hours?

No. Shorts views count only towards the separate 10 million Shorts views route.
