How the Instagram Algorithm Works in 2026 — Feed, Reels, Explore & Search

There isn't one Instagram algorithm — Feed, Stories, Reels, Explore and Search each rank content differently. Here is what Instagram has publicly said matters most, and how to act on it.
Feed and Stories
Mostly content from accounts you follow, ranked by how likely you are to interact: past interactions with the account, likes, comments, saves and time spent.
Reels
Mostly content from accounts you don't follow. Key signals: watch-through (how much of the reel people watch), replays, likes, shares and "send to a friend". Original content is favoured over reposts.
Explore
Recommendations based on what you've engaged with before; strong early engagement on a post helps it reach Explore.
Search
Keywords in your name field, username, bio, captions and alt text — this is why captions with real search words matter more than ever.
What to do
- Hook in the first second; keep reels short enough to be watched fully.
- Make content people send to friends.
- Write keyword-rich captions.
- Post consistently and reply to comments quickly.
- Give new posts an early push of engagement.
